HISTORY OF THE HALL

Kwame Nkrumah Hall is among the ten halls of residence in the University of Cape Coast established in November, 1998 to accommodate only graduate students. Kwame Nkrumah Hall is located at the eastern end of the University adjacent to the Valco Hall at the North Campus. Later, the Hall started accommodating undergraduate students due to expansion of facilities and the increasing number of students admitted by the University in 1998/1999 academic year. Currently, the Hall accommodates mainly male and female first year undergraduate and few continuing student affiliates. Due to the in-out-out - out policy on students accommodation introduced by the University in 2007, the Hall now accommodates mainly fresh students with a few continuing students who are sportsmen and women, Cadet Officers, Committee Members and JCRC Executive. The Hall also accommodates some National Service Personnel and some international.

The Hall was named after Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of the Republic of Ghana in recognition of his excellent contribution to UCC, Ghana and Africa as a whole. Leadership by Example is the Hall’s motto. The search for a suitable name which stretched over a number of years was by a search committee.

Thank God, through the leadership of Mr. Joseph C. Sefenu, the then Hall Master and the efforts of the Vice-Chancellor at that time, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Addow Obeng, the Hall obtained her name which was beautifully outdoored on March 10, 2007. Kwame Nkrumah Hall is located at the eastern end of the University.

The first caretaker of the Hall was Professor Ameyaw Akumfi, the then Pro Vice- Chancellor. Professor Ameyaw Akumfi’s work in the Hall covered a brief period, and paved the way for the appointment of the first and other substantive Hall Masters.
